Nucleation can likewise happen in precious stone answer for develop new gems. It is found in gases when little air pockets blend into bigger ones. All in all, nucleation is a self-sorting out procedure that prompts another thermodynamic stage or a self-gathered structure. Nucleation is influenced by the degree of contaminations in a framework, which can give surfaces to help get together. In heterogeneous nucleation, association starts at nucleation focuses on surfaces. In homogeneous nucleation, association happens away from a surface. For instance, sugar gems developing on a string is a case of heterogeneous nucleation. Another model is the crystallization of a snowflake around a residue molecule. A case of homogeneous nucleation is development of precious stones in an answer as opposed to a holder divider. Instances of Nucleation Residue and toxins give nucleation destinations to water fume in the environment to shape clouds.Seed gems give nucleation locales to precious stone growing. In the Diet Coke and Mentos ejection, the Mentos confections offer nucleation locales for the arrangement of carbon dioxide bubbles. If you place your finger in a glass of pop, carbon dioxide air pockets will nucleate around it. <img information srcset=https://www.thoughtco.com/thmb/ApuhWs_hs3vQYaSI21ACY6Z_TiI=/300x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/Nucleation_finger-5c0929e446e0fb0001d70a48.jpg 300w, https://www.thoughtco.com/thmb/ldnomJ1T-Z4ojtTXwDwc2iriP_o=/482x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/Nucleation_finger-5c0929e446e0fb0001d70a48.jpg 482w, https://www.thoughtco.com/thmb/LSIN3jB6V6CMBhNoaTlxJj4TLUI=/664x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/Nucleation_finger-5c0929e446e0fb0001d70a48.jpg 664w, https://www.thoughtco.com/thmb/WfVS1EwambbkvxkqVAZw4dUM6e0=/1030x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/Nucleation_finger-5c0929e446e0fb0001d70a48.jpg 1030w information src=https://www.thoughtco.com/thmb/bG7V6DKwe1ybzAVpNEpRNPOfhfw=/1030x768/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/Nucleation_finger-5c0929e446e0fb0001d70a48.jpg src=//:0 alt=Carbon dioxide bubbles nucleating on a finger. class=lazyload information click-tracked=true information img-lightbox=true information expand=300 id=mntl-sc-square image_1-0-8 information following container=true /> Carbon dioxide bubbles nucleating on a finger. Be that as it may, nursing is really a staggeringly troublesome and burdening work, one loaded up with calm legends. Here are simply 8â of the numerous reasons why nursing draws in the hardest and most committed individuals to the calling. 1. Itââ¬â¢s a matter of life and death. As a medical attendant, you truly (and routinely) grasp peopleââ¬â¢s lives. What number of different employments have that equivalent amazing responsibility?2. You need interminable knowledge. There are so a lot of clinical terms you should be comfortable with to be an attendant. What's more, itââ¬â¢s not simply the phrasing. You additionally need to hold a colossal measure of data in your mind, or hazard risky results: doctorsââ¬â¢ orders, patients vitals and other information, and so on. You likewise need to stay aware of patterns, do proceeding with instruction, and drive yourself to continue adapting so you donââ¬â¢t fall behind the cutting edge.3.à You are encircled by individuals in their least moments.Itââ¬â¢s inconceivably hard to watch another person endure not to mention die. You may think medical attendants become acclimated to both these things; they donââ¬â¢t. They become capable at carrying out their responsibility even with affliction and misfortune, however that doesnââ¬â¢t mean a medical caretaker isnââ¬â¢t affected.4. You come last.As a medical attendant, you need to put nearly everyoneââ¬â¢s needs before your own: primary care physicians, patients, in any event, putting your activity in front of your family time when your calendar requires. You need to grin, be unendingly persistent, be compassionate, however take care not to get excessively connected. You may even need to have breakfast while driving since it may very well be the main dinner you get all day.5. You donââ¬â¢t get paid enough.Even howeve r nursing is a field where itââ¬â¢s constantly conceivable to take on additional movements or openings, you most likely are not getting repaid at a really reasonable rate for everything you do. You donââ¬â¢t get occasions. You pass up loads of your family and public activity openings, especially when things run late or youââ¬â¢re accessible if the need arises. A great deal of emergency clinics are additionally now curtailing recruiting and rather having their medical attendants work additional extra time. It very well may be pretty thankless!6.à You once in a while get the regard you deserve. As a medical attendant, especially since itââ¬â¢s a transcendently female calling, you get less regard than you merit. Nursing is continually depreciated contrasted with all the more dominatingly male callings. You do a colossal portion of the work in the consideration circumstance, and get practically none of the credit. Furthermore, you must be mindful and merciful notwithstanding incidental abuse, disregard, and through and through rudeness.7.à Itââ¬â¢s very strenuous. The burdening hours worked, the being on your feet continually, every one of these things signify being sore and tired practically constantly. Medical attendants likewise do an immense measure of hard work and regularly create back problems.8. Everyoneââ¬â¢s a patient. As an attendant, youââ¬â¢re destined to be assaulted with writings and photographs of all your friendsââ¬â¢ and familyââ¬â¢s afflictions approaching you with the expectation of complimentary clinical guidance. It will be hard to make sense of where to adhere to a meaningful boundary in your off hours.Donââ¬â¢t be debilitated, however nursing is a calling that needs saints, and if youââ¬â¢re attracted to it, you can change lives. The great exceeds the awful, if youââ¬â¢re ready to wade through it to get to the compensating parts! These students made the decision to ââ¬Å"go down a road not yet taken.â⬠Along the way they are facing challenges, getting far out of their comfort zones, and pushing their limits to make an impact on the lives of others. This series is about their stories. This time around we will get to know Rachel Stanley, from Coventry, in the United Kingdom, who is working on her degree at Hult San Francisco. Stanely spent last summer working with poor communities in Uganda, teaching business skills, and promoting an entrepreneurial spirit. RQ: What sort of work were you doing in Uganda? RS: I spent two months in Uganda. I was there with a charity I found while searching for what I wanted to do after my corporate job. RQ: You want to give a shout out to this charity? RS: Sure! The charity is called A Little Bit Of Hope, and they do a lot of awesome stuff in southeast in Uganda. Itââ¬â¢s the only charity thatââ¬â¢s focusing on that area, and looking to enable communities to develop and grow themselves up. They always look to enable communities rather than ââ¬Å"do toâ⬠communities. RQ: That is a huge thing when youââ¬â¢re doing this kind of development work, trying to get it to spring up from the community, rather than getting there and telling them what to do. RS: Exactly! I ended up being a lot more useful than I thought I would be. I had the suspicion that I was going there as a reasonably well-off British person, and while my lifeââ¬â¢s not perfect, itââ¬â¢s nothing compared to what some of these communities are going through. I didnââ¬â¢t want to be one of those people that just expected to solve all their problems. The biggest thing for me to do was to try and actually learn what itââ¬â¢s like to experienceââ¬âto kind of live through their lives and see what it means to be there, and try to use some of my background skills from business. RQ: Your business skills stem from corporate work in Germany? RS: I worked in Germany for five years for a big energy corporation; I did market and business analysis, and strategy and business development. And as I transferred into social entrepreneurship, I thought, ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve got all these skills, it makes sense to try and use them for good,â⬠and thatââ¬â¢s what got me excited about social entrepreneurship in the first place. I was researching where I could go to get some experience before I went off to do my degree, and thatââ¬â¢s when I found this charity. One of the things they talked about was how they were looking to enable business development in this area. It turned out to be a perfect fit. They already had their expertise in development economics and traditional organizational development, but they were looking for someone who could empower the community with business skills. So I spent time getting to know their problems. Many people had a strong passion for what they were doing, but struggled with the basic skills that you get from a higher education degree or working with a team. I did a number of workshops with a number of organizationsââ¬âan orphanage, and a chicken-rearing company, among others. It was really exciting to see what people wanted to do, and the impact as a result of these workshop ââ¬Å"interventionsâ⬠. I also got to see just how microfinance truly has an impact, w hich I was initially skeptical about. RQ: What were some of the things that you were skeptical about going in that mightââ¬â¢ve changed substantially by the time you left? Or, things you were quite positive about that mightââ¬â¢ve changed to skepticism or disappointment? RS: The biggest thing I took away is that maybe the traditional scheme of aid isnââ¬â¢t the best way for long-term development and empowerment. Itââ¬â¢s not about ââ¬Å"not giving people stuffâ⬠, because some people truly need aid. But it does create a long-term cycle of dependence that can be hard to break after a generation or two. Think of the ââ¬Å"teach a man to fishâ⬠situation. By approaching development issues with techniques like design thinking and lean principles, youââ¬â¢re more likely to make a long-lasting, sustainable impact on these communities. Thatââ¬â¢s why itââ¬â¢s so incredibly important to create these spaces for facilitating and training, in order to change their mindset so they believe that they can create and generate for themselves. RQ: How do you think this experience, paired with the MSE Program at Hult, will shape your career post-Hult? RS: Both experiences have reinforced my choice to do this program and use business skills for good, in order to make a bigger impact than traditional donations. Itââ¬â¢s amazing to see how a microfinance loan of $10 can truly help to start up a business. But even with the best intentions, not having the right business skills ensures that there will be issues, if not failures. Iââ¬â¢ve become quite excited about business education. Not to mention that this opens doors in developing countries. A lot of the working options poorer people have means they are vulnerable to bad working conditions. Enabling them to create their own conditions and be their own bosses makes for better quality of work and life. RQ: How about some words of wisdom for prospective MSE students, or anyone looking to make a shift into the social entrepreneurship environment? RS: Get out of your comfort zone and try to at least live a day in your customerââ¬â¢s shoes. I think this is sound advice for pursuing a business endeavor, social or not. But having this level of empathy will give you the extra dimension that can deliver impressive results and long-lasting impact. RQ: That sounds about right. Thanks so much! Ill definitely carry this mindset with me into the future. Technology and social media allow us to be different people in several places at once. Im excited to see how I can establish myself in whatever city Ill be lucky enough to call home and still maintain deep connections with people all over the world. Iââ¬â¢m inspired by my classmates every day. Hearing some of their life stories and how getting this degree fits into their greater mission has been very humbling. My biggest challenge has been finding the ââ¬Ërightââ¬â¢ path for me. There have been rooms Ive felt like I shouldnt be in, but now Im proud to feel as though I truly belong, wherever I am.â⬠. Nielsen and Norman(2000) state that consumer cognition of the trust of e-vendors and attitude is highly influenced by the website interface design. The interaction of products or service information between clients and e-vendors will be influenced by user interface of e-store in website. a well-designed user interface could minimise cost of searching to clients and reduce the used time for online shopping. When the internet is fast, online shopping is fun and pleasurable, unmixed easy to follow steps by clients, will reduce time spend on shopping and clients find out how to purchase better according to their needs, Li Zhang (2002). Also, the help function should be put in navigation, which will assist clientsà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ to deal accordingly with the problems they face. Se rial navigation applications such as search engine and site maps are made available to clients to assist them in choosing and purchasing products online by many e-stores. 2.4.5 Online security In e-commerce the security of online transaction is seen as the key factor which is repeatedly debated on, Elliot Fewell (2000). Furnell Karweni (1999) expressed that due to lack of faith in online marketers, clients tend to be more concerned with their personal information all these due to the insecurity brought about by the online market. Financial statements and privacy is seen as the most important to clients compared to other things. The well being of a clientà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢s personal information is not well explained and the procedure of how it is done not elaborated on even as the online stores sites give policies for protection of customer personal information and claim secure online transaction. Gaining the faith of clients by online marketers is still a big problem even th ough information technology has highly evolved to insure high security levels, Roy et al (2001). Online clients are afraid of the security system of third party cheating characters, especially when they are not assured of their credit cards information safety, observed Miyazaki Fernadez (2001). Clientsà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ financial information and identity codes may be leaked during a transaction, and this is a scenario that really exists in online transaction environment. Even when online shopping has many advantages such as relatively low prices and a variety of products to choose from, customers may opt for traditional purchase of goods just because of their information insecurity, Brown Muchira (2004). 2.5 Information risks E-commerce in the 21st century is an unavoidable trend; the biggest hindrance to influence its development being the risk, China is still in its starting stage in the development of electronic trade and has a clear understanding that to take the risk is essential. From the characteristics of e-commerce, the risk can be divided into internal risk and external risk, the risk of information belongs to the external risk. Information risk is seen as in the information sharing process, the accuracy of the information, hysteresis or other hard result from information in-division and the severity of information pollution phenomenon according to Chen Qin (2008). Generally, information risk is from information asymmetry and information insecurity. 2.5.1 Information Asymmetry The problem in controlling the outcome that causes evasion of risk by a business partner is known as information asymmetry, Kumar van Dissel (1996). Moreover, it can be elucidated as where different business parties dealing with each other understand the information differently; the vendor is more enlightened while the client is less informed. Briefly, information asymmetry is that in market transaction, when one party of the transaction cannot observe or sup ervise the act of the other party, or the observation and supervision are expensive, the information gotten may also be incomplete, hence, both parties of the transaction will understand asymmetrical information differently. In information asymmetry in the market there are generally two kinds: the vendors have more information than the clients, and the buyers are more enlightened than the vendors, Salam et al (2003). The first one is the main form in many goods market. In the process of online purchase, customers need to research for many goods information to decide, add the accurate products function description, the best price information, the trustworthy commodity information from website forum, credit card information security on the website etc. The Internet just like an information hodgepodge, many e-marketers give invalid information driven by selfishness and inconsideration to the clientsà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ interests. The result of information asymmetry includes adverse selec tion risk and moral risk. 2.5.1.1 Adverse selection risk Theoretically, one of merits of online transaction is through many of network technology clients are enable to get all the needed information conveniently and within very limited period of time, hence enable information sharing, Chen Qin (2008). However, the business enterprises often from their selfishness end up hiding important product information like commercial secret from clients. Consequently, the vendor has more product information but the customer has only limited information, this makes the client to lack to make accurate evaluation of the quality and cost of products, with this average kind of market, the outcome is vendors being left with the high quality products. 2.5.1.2 Moral risk Moral risk is mostly done as a cheating character. Like the behaviours of the internet, the clients get information that is posted and broadcasted by vendors, and then decide on the costs, use of products which may include incorrect information based on that information. For example, clients cannot receive the goods after payment, or the vendors provide the poor quality products to customers and they keep changing the description and also do not carry out their parts after the purchase according to the deal. Miyazaki and Fernandez (2001) reported that 56.4% of consumers have met the unauthenticated information when shopping online, 40.9% customers had encountered the commitment of online service but the e-vendors failed to fulfil their end of the bargain, and 36.1% online customers stated that it was impossible to contact the customer care centre or their complaint via the phone or email was ignored point blank. More so, some fraudsters use non trustable emails or false website to cheat shoppers, then victimsà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â ¢ financial information such as credit card number, account detail is usually shared. The scammers usually hide their identities as bank staff, online retailers or credit card co mpanies to attract users to give personal information, once they key in the information; it is stolen by disguised viruses. Research indicates that more than 5% of people who see the scams will respond to them among them being some who have already being cheated before, Contantinide (2004). Clients tend to lose trust in online shopping due to all these cheating characters. Hence, e-marketers should provide trustworthy and secure information environment to minimize the situation of information asymmetry. 2.5.2 Information security risk Recently, scholars have not come to an agreement on how to generally explain online shopping risk but the security of information security is mostly known as field of e-commerce risk, Ngai Wat (2005). Greenstein (2000) views risk as risk information linked with possible physical, mental or financial lose of confidential data or its destruction, generation or making use of data or programs that can harm the other party. Information insecurity may cause client indecision, when dealing with online purchase especially. Information security and privacy are important to the indecision linked with how personal information is dealt with by e-vendors and who is allowed to access it, Tsai Yeh (2010). Personal information in a numerical form can be easily duplicated, shared, and used, which enable e-marketers to establish and be more enlightened about clients. Hence, this information could bring about serious insecurity of inappropriate clients with personalized services and other merits, Malhotra (2004) It is through open network of online purchase that, the computer system is widely used to store, transmit and transact information like statement information, invoice information, information to negotiate and personal business documents. The threats of information security are mostly usually from a variety of things that keep evolving. Forsythe et al (2006) stated that the most common threats are hacking, malicious attacks and co mputer virus; other aspects are like physical damage, personal destruction and natural calamities. Hence, client information security needs to be guaranteed as the information security technology of network system is very important in the e-purchase environment. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Although written long ago, the emotions expressed within this work, emotions of bravery, valor, and ethics still speak to us centuries later. The anonymous author of the poem convinces us through the masterful use of various literary elements that emphasize its meaning and message. Conflict, imagery and setting are three literary elements that contribute to the effectiveness of the poem. The use of conflict aidsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Another literary element that offer meaning to the poem is imagery, by simply allowing the readers to envision the events of the story. In the first part of the story (129-134), Beowulf is described as coming over ââ¬Å"seas beating at the sandâ⬠while ââ¬Å"the ship fo amed through the sea like a bird.â⬠This scene truly guides the readers to admire the vivid description of how proud and tough the ship looks. This ship in this case, becomes a metonymy for Beowulf himself, who is certainly proud and strong, resulting in the readersââ¬â¢ admiration. Additional imagery is used describing the mere, or lake, discussed above, with ââ¬Å"storms [an] waves splash[ing] towards the sky, as dark as the air as black as the rain that the heavens weepâ⬠(440-442). This clearly illustrates how dreadful Grendel and his mothersââ¬â¢ home is. It intensely aids us to picture how grotesquely unpleasant the lake actually is. Near the end of the tale (lines 651-653], Beowulf ââ¬Å"[strides] with his shield at his side and a mail shirt of his breastâ⬠¦.. Toward the tower, under the rocky cliffs.â⬠While Beowulf awaits the battle, the description of his armor and the details of each entry help us to respect how ready he is for his concluding ba ttle. Even as an elderly man, Beowulf is a hero beyond compare. In closing, the use of imagery greatly enriches the readersââ¬â¢ experience of this heroic epic. If it was a train a bur or a subway, we have to pay for it, but is that really necessary? It is a theme, which is often discussed, but I am convinced that if public transport is free we would have a better world. It should be free of charge to give everyone the opportunity to get to their destination. It is true that many of us would not prefer to take public transportation if given a choice, the more people we have taking buses, trains, and subways, the less people we have on the road. If more people would use public transport, we would have decrease traffic, noise pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The crucial fact is that we live in a society where cars are really required, but it would be so much better to use the bus or the train. For example, if I need to go to the University I always take the train and the bus. So a lot more people would use public transport and just leave their cars home. All of us want a cleaner planet for our future and the future of our children. Furthermore there are a lot of people who do not have that much money to pay for public transport. I know a family back home, who always take the bike to get to the supermarket, which is 5 kilometers far away. They have a hard life and they do not have money to pay for the bus and this makes their life much harder. In addition people can easy get to their work with help of public transport, but especially driving by train is really expensive. So for example a man works 7 hours in a not well played job and into the bargain the work place is far away. So he has to pay that much money for the train, that it is more trouble than ità ´s worth. What also must not be forgotten is that driving by train or bus helps the social connection and could also support a better atmosphere if it would be free. I have been to Australia and in Melbourne there are some busses and trains for free. This makes life their so much easier and you fell just better and you are happier, if you drive with a train which is for free. To sum up, you can see that there are a lot of considerable advantages for making public transport free. Of course we need a lot of money to realize this idea, but all in all it would be a better way of live, especially if we look in the future. We all can help to provide a better environment and that is important for the future. I am sure that if public transport would be free, a lot of people would use it and want to help for a better world for all of us. Indeed, new styles tend to emerge from subsequent ones mainly as critics or advancements. Therefore, this paper compares the Dadaism and Surrealism periods with the central aim of identifying their correlations. Dadaism style appeared at an earlier date than Surrealism. Dadaism initiated at Switzerland and became popular in the period 1919-1922. The style mainly entailed visual art, poetry and graphics. Historically, the emergence of the movement is associated with periods of Word War I. The society had witnessed the wrath of exploitive leaders during the period hence was searching for a tactical way of communicating their concerns (Elger & Grosenick, 2006). Therefore, the movementââ¬â¢s prime aim was to critic the brutality of the war. Additionally, Dadaists focused on challenging an idea of exploitive s cholar rigidity presented in the earlier Art-works. The movement hence participated actively in purposeful irrationality and dismissal of the customary values of the art. The society had considered some virtues meaningless hence; the movement contradicted the idea using tactical artistic skills (Elger & Grosenick, 2006). Their settings embraced public gatherings and social backgrounds and emphasized on political issues. Consequently, the scheme developed artistic pieces that presented sensitive concealed messages. Surrealism movements started at France and peaked in the period 1924-40. Apparently, this was a considerable time after the era of the Dadaism. Surrealism presented a concept of unorganized pattern in art (Levy, 1997). The style was inspired by psychoanalytical ideologies hence artists thought of engaging imaginary and illusion world in developing Art pieces. Indeed, the style exploits involuntary mind in developing Art without a precise intention of creating logical clari ty (Levy, 1997). Initially, the Surrealist declined asserting visual work since they considered procedures of painting and sculpting to be obscene and unnecessary. As such, these practices failed to promote spontaneity, a central trait of the style. Relationship between the historical Art periods The historical periods associated with the Dadaism and Surrealism can provide us with crucial information about the Art. As indicated, Dadaism was characterized with planned expressions that scorned unacceptable attributes in the society. This developed a notion were Art was viewed as a political tool hence lost its entertainment taste. This diversion challenged the Art hence there was the need of redesigning the field (Levy, 1997). Surrealists considered developing a style that could introduce unrestricted creativity. Surrealist concurred with the Dadaism ideologies of criticizing exploitative governance; however, they observed that Art should develop works that can give the society peace of mind instead of concentrating on bad memories. Therefore, surrealism was a celebratory style that was somewhat to relive the pressures in the society. Exploitations were apparent as Dadaism advocated; however, people needed not remain in such situation hence a change was necessary (Levy, 1997). Additionally, in daily endeavors people encounter with challenges that occasionally demands a relaxed mind. Surrealist observed that driving people to an imaginary world could effectively provide people with suitable relaxed Nicki Larochehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14334476322575965190noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-551977726411409584.post-71334609776020546562020-02-12T04:42:00.001-08:002020-02-12T04:42:02.591-08:00IMPORTANT TO HAVE TWO GUARDS PER SHIFT AT KINDER MORGAN EssayIMPORTANT TO HAVE TWO GUARDS PER SHIFT AT KINDER MORGAN - Essay Example rmation (2012), ââ¬Å"Kinder Morgan monitors and inspects its pipeline system 24-hours a day from its state-of-the-art System Control Centerâ⬠(Kinder Morgan: Pipeline, 2012, p. 3). However, there are some factors that affect the economy on the very basic level. One of those factors is infrastructure of a country. Infrastructure of a country can play an important role in the strengthening of the economy of a country. This paper analyses one such example of the effects of infrastructure on the economy. The example is that of the First Transcontinental Railroad. This railroad is said to be the first communication revolution of America. The railroad reduced the time of travel between east and west costs from six months to one week and it was indeed a huge achievement. This paper examines the problems faced by the entities engaged in the construction of the railroad and the effects of the railroad on the economy of the country (Heintz, 2009). Infrastructure can enhance the growth of the economy of a country at a very fast pace, specifically in case of developing countries. Developing companies usually have weak economic environment because of lack of sufficient infrastructure. Infrastructure can boost trade in a country which results in accelerated economic activities in the country. This scenario can best be explained with the example of the First Transcontinental Railroad that was constructed between the years 1863 and 1869 in the United States of America. The railroad was built by the Central Pacific Railroad of California and Union Pacific Railroad. These two entities were chartered by the Pacific Railway Act, 1862. This railroad connected the already developed railway network of the Eastern cost with California that was in its developing stages. The railroad was completed in May, 1869 when it changed the economic scenario of the American West for good. The railroad initiated a new series of trade and communication that triggered the economic growth in the USA. Planning for Construction of the Transcontinental Railroad In the year 1862, it was determined that the companies that would carry out the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad would be Central Pacific Railroad and Union Pacific Railroad. The companies started construction from their respective points. Central Pacific started building the railroad eastward from Sacramento, California and Union Pacific started building the railroad westward from Council Bluffs, Iowa. Although the companies had been assigned the task and they had started constructing the railroad, the point where both the railroads would meet was not determined. There were a number of problems that hindered the construction of the railroad resulting from the lack of adequate planning. The construction also slowed down due to the Civil War between the years 1861 and 1865. This factor also added to the problems already present due to the lack of planning. However, a point in the Mormon territory of Utah was determined to the Promontory Point where the railroads being constructed by the two companies would meet. The construction completed on 10 May, 1869 when the two railroads met at the Promontory Point. Problems Faced in Construction A railroad connecting the east and west cost of the USA had always been a dream but it was shaped into reality by the President Abraham Lincoln. However, the railroad was completed after four years of his death. The construction of the railroad was not independent of any problems. This is a particularly daunting field because our knowledge of robotics is still very primitive, but this does not merit neglecting further investigation. Robotic soccer has emerged as a new challenge in Artificial Intelligence, but the question remains of whether robots playing sports has anything to do with true ââ¬Å"intelligence,â⬠or the level of creativity that is necessary to produce something artistic. The study of robotic soccer is similar to that of computer-composed art in several ways, the simplest parallel being that the more intelligent a computer is, the more it excels at each of the fields. After a certain point, raw computing power will not help a computer to improve anymore at either soccer or art, but the ability to think originally will be essential in bringing out true talent in a machine. The concept for robotic soccer originated in 1994 at an AI conference when professor of computer science at University of British Columbia, Alan Mackworth, presented a team of motorized miniature Porsches with computer chips that chased a ball around, trying to knock it into a goal. The motorized cars were equipped with only a vision system and some basic programming, but much to the excitement of the crowd of European and Japanese spectators, they were completely independent of any human control. Mackworth had originally come up with the idea only a few years earlier, after learning of MIT and IBMââ¬â¢s joint project to build Deep Blue, the most advanced chess-playing computer program that became better than any human player after beating grandmaster Kasparov in a best out of five game match. Mackworth realized how simple it was to construct a computer that could outwit a human opponent at chess, commenting that, ââ¬Å"chess computers sit in a room and stare at a board. I thought AI should raise the bar.â⬠(Preville, National Post) Chess seemed to be tailored towards computers - it is a single-player, strategical game in which players have no time constraints when thinking through all possible moves, and it does not necessitate mobility. Nicknamed Old Hickory, he left an indelible imprint on the nation that extends beyond his face adorning the twenty dollar bill. Jackson split the preexisting Republican Party into the Whig and Democratic Parties, establishing the dual-party structure that exists today. He was the first president who came from a rural, deep Southern background (he was born in the rustic woods of South Carolina) and his impoverished country upbringing informed his presidential policies. As someone who also captained the premier national political position, Jackson is responsible for bringing the experience and voice of the common man to the federal government. This essay will explore three of the most salient aspects of Jacksons presidency: the Nullification Crisis of 1832, the National Bank episode of 1833-34, and the treatment of American Indians and slaves. At the time of Jacksons election, there existed a protective tariff that aided big businesses and domestic transportation initiatives. However, the tariff was met unfavorably by the South, which felt that the tariffs ultimate purpose was to strengthen the industrial north at the expense of the agrarian south. He kept his ringer on (much to Micahââ¬â¢s delight, no doubt), and I suspected he slept with the phone next to his pillow. ââ¬Å"Yes?â⬠Eddieââ¬â¢s voice was alert and ready, as though he hadnââ¬â¢t been asleep at all. That was just how he was. ââ¬Å"I need you to go see if you can wake up Trey,â⬠I told him. ââ¬Å"Sonyaââ¬â¢s been kidnapped and is being held at some weird compound with a logo like Treyââ¬â¢s tattoo. We need to find out what he knows.â⬠This was the first time Eddie was hearing about Sonyaââ¬â¢s kidnapping, but he didnââ¬â¢t ask for further information ââ¬â or how Iââ¬â¢d known her location. He knew sheââ¬â¢d been in danger recently, and this quick message was enough to get him going. I didnââ¬â¢t exactly know what would happen when Eddie did find Trey, seeing as there was no way Iââ¬â¢d be able to talk to Trey myself until morning. Still, we had to start somewhere. ââ¬Å"Okay,â⬠said Eddie. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m on it. Iââ¬â¢ll call you back.â⬠We disconnected, and I stifled a yawn. ââ¬Å"Well, here goes nothing. Letââ¬â¢s hope Eddie can find out something.â⬠ââ¬Å"Preferably without beating up Trey in the process,â⬠said Adrian. He snuggled against the passenger seat, the only sign that he too was feeling tired from our late night. Heââ¬â¢d long since converted from a vampireââ¬â¢s nocturnal schedule. ââ¬Å"Since that might limit how much we can find out.â⬠I made a face. ââ¬Å"If Treyââ¬â¢s somehow involved with this, Iââ¬â¢m not sure I want to take it easy on him. And yetâ⬠¦ I just canââ¬â¢t believe he is.â⬠ââ¬Å"People fool each other all the time. Look at you. You think Trey knows youââ¬â¢re part of a secret society helping to keep vampires hidden from the world?â⬠ââ¬Å"Actuallyâ⬠¦ yes.â⬠I stopped at a red light and thought back on some of Treyââ¬â¢s weird behaviors. ââ¬Å"He knows Jillââ¬â¢s a Moroi, Iââ¬â¢m almost certain of it. He didnââ¬â¢t notice right away, but when he did, he kept telling me to keep her hidden. Then after Sonya was attacked, he told me to stay safe.â⬠A horrible realization was dawning on me. ââ¬Å"He knew. He knew I was friends with Sonya. He probably knew about the attack and never said anything!â⬠ââ¬Å"Not a surprise if his groupââ¬â¢s working counter to yours.â⬠Adrianââ¬â¢s tone softened. ââ¬Å"If it makes you feel better, it sounds like he was kind of conflicted if he was trying to warn you.â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know that it does. Oh, Adrian.â⬠I pulled up in front of his building and saw the yellow Mustang illuminated in the streetlight. ââ¬Å"You left the car out. Youââ¬â¢re lucky it didnââ¬â¢t get towed.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll move it,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"And donââ¬â¢t look at me like that. Itââ¬â¢s within a half-mile radius. Iââ¬â¢m not breaking your rules.â⬠ââ¬Å"Just be careful,â⬠I muttered. He opened Latteââ¬â¢s door and glanced back at me. ââ¬Å"You sure you want to go back to the school? Youââ¬â¢ll be locked in until morning.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not much I can do until then anyway. I want to be there the instant I can get access to Trey. Iââ¬â¢ll trust in Eddie for now.â⬠Adrian looked reluctant to leave me but finally nodded. ââ¬Å"Call if you need anything. Iââ¬â¢m going to keep trying to see if I can find Sonya in her dreams. Didnââ¬â¢t have much luck earlier.â⬠One of spiritââ¬â¢s more disconcerting powers was the userââ¬â¢s ability to intrude on the dreams of other people. ââ¬Å"Is she just not asleep?â⬠ââ¬Å"That, or drugged.â⬠Neither option made me feel any better. He gave me one last, lingering look before leaving. I returned to Amberwood where a sleepy student aide waved me in without comment. Mrs. Weathers had long since gone home, and her overnight coverage didnââ¬â¢t seem particularly concerned about my comings and goings. As I was walking up the stairs, my phone rang. Eddie. ââ¬Å"Well, it took forever, but I finally woke his roommate up,â⬠he told me. ââ¬Å"And?â⬠ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s not there. I guess he wasnââ¬â¢t last night either. Some kind of family emergency.â⬠ââ¬Å"No word on when heââ¬â¢ll be back?â⬠I was beginning to think all of Treyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"family stuffâ⬠might be more insidious than Iââ¬â¢d guessed. I was also willing to bet he wasnââ¬â¢t the only one with a sun tattoo. ââ¬Å"No.â⬠I DRIFTED IN AND OUT of sleep that night. My body was exhausted from the magic, but I was too on edge about Sonya to fully give in to the fatigue. I keep waking up and checking my cell phone, afraid Iââ¬â¢d missed some call ââ¬â despite the fact that it was on its loudest setting. I finally gave up and got out of bed a couple of hours before the cafeteriaââ¬â¢s breakfast began. By the time Iââ¬â¢d showered and dressed ââ¬â and put my coffee maker into high gear ââ¬â I was back into open hours on campus. Not that it did me much good. I made two more calls after that, first to Spencerââ¬â¢s to see if Trey was working. I didnââ¬â¢t expect him to be, but it was a good excuse to see if heââ¬â¢d been there in the last couple of days. He hadnââ¬â¢t been. My next call was to Stanton, reporting Sonyaââ¬â¢s disappearance. I told her we had a lead that connected one of my classmates to the vampire hunters and that Sonya was likely being held at a compound outside of town. I didnââ¬â¢t elaborate on how I knew, and Stanton was distracted enough by the kidnapping in general to ask much more. At breakfast, I found my ââ¬Å"familyâ⬠sitting with Micah over at Westââ¬â¢s cafeteria. Eddie, Angeline, and Jillââ¬â¢s troubled faces told me they all knew about Sonya. Micah was cheerfully chatting about something, and I had a feeling his presence was preventing the others from discussing what they really wanted to. You read "The Golden Lily Chapter 20" in category "Essay examples" When Micah turned to ask Eddie something, I leaned over and murmured to Jill, ââ¬Å"Get him out of here.â⬠ââ¬Å"Tell him to go?â⬠she whispered back. ââ¬Å"If you need to. Or go with him.â⬠ââ¬Å"But I want to ââ¬â ââ¬Å" She bit her lip as Micahââ¬â¢s attention returned to her. She looked unhappy about what she had to do, but soon put on the resolved expression that recently Iââ¬â¢d often seen her wear. She nodded toward Micahââ¬â¢s plate. ââ¬Å"Hey, are you about done? I need to check on something with Miss Yamani. Will you come with me?â⬠Micah brightened. ââ¬Å"Of course.â⬠Once the two of them were gone, I turned to Eddie and Angeline. ââ¬Å"Any sign of Trey?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"No,â⬠said Eddie. ââ¬Å"I checked in again this morning. His roommateââ¬â¢s starting to hate me. Canââ¬â¢t say I blame him.â⬠ââ¬Å"This is driving me crazy!â⬠I said, feeling like I could beat my head against the wall. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re so close and yet helpless. Every minute that goes by is another that Sonya doesnââ¬â¢t have.â⬠He grimaced. ââ¬Å"Are we sure sheââ¬â¢s alive?â⬠ââ¬Å"She was last night,â⬠I said. Both Eddie and Angeline looked at me in amazement. ââ¬Å"How do you know?â⬠she asked. ââ¬Å"Um, well, I ââ¬â no way!â⬠My jaw dropped as I stared past Eddie. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s Trey!â⬠Sure enough, a bleary-eyed Trey had just entered the cafeteria. Damp hair indicated a recent shower, but there were bruises and scrapes all over him that I could no longer attribute to football. Eddie was in motion before I could say another word, and Angeline and I were quick to follow. I half-expected Eddie to tackle Trey then and there. Instead, Eddie walked right in front of Trey and blocked him from entering the food line. I was just in time to hear Eddie say, ââ¬Å"No breakfast today. Youââ¬â¢re coming with us.â⬠Trey started to protest and then saw Angeline and me. Jill suddenly appeared as well, having apparently lost Micah. A sad look crossed Treyââ¬â¢s features ââ¬â almost defeated ââ¬â and he gave a weary nod. ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s go outside.â⬠As soon as weââ¬â¢d cleared the door, Eddie grabbed hold of Trey and shoved him against the building. ââ¬Å"Whereââ¬â¢s Sonya Karp?â⬠Eddie demanded. Trey looked understandably surprised. Eddie was lean and muscled, but most people underestimated just how strong he was. ââ¬Å"Eddie, back off!â⬠I hissed, glancing around uneasily. I had the same urge, true, but our interrogation wouldnââ¬â¢t get very far if a teacher came by and thought we were roughing up another student. Eddie released Trey and stepped back, but there was still a dangerous glint in his eyes. ââ¬Å"Whereââ¬â¢s the compound youââ¬â¢re holding her at?â⬠That seemed to wake Trey out of his sluggish state. ââ¬Å"How do you know about that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ll ask the questions,â⬠said Eddie. He didnââ¬â¢t touch Trey again, but his proximity and posture left no question he would go to extremes if needed. ââ¬Å"Is Sonya still alive?â⬠Trey hesitated, and I almost expected a denial of knowledge. ââ¬Å"Y-yes. For now.â⬠Eddie snapped again. He grabbed the front of Treyââ¬â¢s shirt and jerked him close. ââ¬Å"I swear, if you and your messed-up associates lay one hand on her ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Eddie,â⬠I warned. For a moment, Eddie didnââ¬â¢t move. Then, reluctantly, he released Treyââ¬â¢s shirt, but stayed where heââ¬â¢d been standing. ââ¬Å"Trey,â⬠I began, keeping the same reasonable tone Iââ¬â¢d just used with Eddie ââ¬â after all, Trey and I were friends, right? ââ¬Å"You have to help us. Please help us find Sonya.â⬠He shook his head. ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t, Sydney. Itââ¬â¢s for your own good. Sheââ¬â¢s evil. I donââ¬â¢t know what trick sheââ¬â¢s played on you or how sheââ¬â¢s got this illusion going on that hides her true identity, but you canââ¬â¢t trust her. Sheââ¬â¢ll turn on you. Let us ââ¬â let us do what we need to.â⬠The words were all correct, right in line with the Warriorsââ¬â¢ propaganda. But, there was something in the way Trey spoke, something about his postureâ⬠¦ I couldnââ¬â¢t quite put my finger on what it was that made me question him. People teased me about my inability to pick up on social cues, but I was almost certain he wasnââ¬â¢t entirely on board with whatever this group wanted him to do. ââ¬Å"This isnââ¬â¢t you, Trey,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"I know you well enough to know. You wouldnââ¬â¢t kill an innocent woman.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s not innocent.â⬠There it was again ââ¬â that mix of emotions. Doubt. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s a monster. You know about them. You know what they can do. Not ones like her.â⬠He nodded toward Jill. ââ¬Å"But the others. The undead ones.â⬠ââ¬Å"Does Sonya look undead?â⬠asked Eddie. ââ¬Å"You see any red eyes?â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠Trey admitted. ââ¬Å"But we have other reports. Witnesses who saw her in Kentucky. Reports of her victims.â⬠It was hard to keep a calm face through that. Iââ¬â¢d actually seen Sonya when she was Strigoi. Sheââ¬â¢d been terrifying, and given half a chance, she would have killed my companions and me. It was hard to accept that when one turned into a Strigoi, they werenââ¬â¢t in control of their senses or soul. They lost touch with their humanity ââ¬â or whatever Moroi had ââ¬â and werenââ¬â¢t the same as theyââ¬â¢d once been. Sonya had done terrible, terrible things, but she was no longer that creature. ââ¬Å"Sonya changed,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s not one of them anymore.â⬠Treyââ¬â¢s eyes narrowed. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s impossible. Youââ¬â¢re being deceived. Thereââ¬â¢s some kind ofâ⬠¦ I donââ¬â¢t knowâ⬠¦ dark magic going on.â⬠ââ¬Å"This isnââ¬â¢t getting us anywhere,â⬠growled Eddie. ââ¬Å"Call Dimitri. Between the two of us, weââ¬â¢ll get him to tell us where this compoundââ¬â¢s at. Iââ¬â¢ve broken into a prison. Getting into this place shouldnââ¬â¢t be that much harder.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, you think so?â⬠A humorless smile crossed Treyââ¬â¢s features. ââ¬Å"That place is surrounded with an electric fence and packed with armed men. Plus, sheââ¬â¢s heavily secured. You canââ¬â¢t just walk in there.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why is she still alive?â⬠asked Angeline. She seemed to realize how weird that sounded and was quick to elaborate. ââ¬Å"That isâ⬠¦ I mean, Iââ¬â¢m glad she is. But if you think sheââ¬â¢s so evil, why didnââ¬â¢t you finish her off?â⬠She glanced at my friends and me. ââ¬Å"Sorry.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a good question,â⬠Eddie told her. Trey took a long time in answering. I had a feeling he was torn between keeping the groupââ¬â¢s secrets and wanting to justify his actions to us. ââ¬Å"Because weââ¬â¢re all being tested,â⬠he said finally. ââ¬Å"To see whoââ¬â¢s worthy of performing the kill.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh my God,â⬠said Jill. ââ¬Å"Hence all your bruises recently,â⬠I said. My fears of domestic abuse werenââ¬â¢t far off, really. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re competing to kill a woman whoââ¬â¢s done nothing to you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Stop saying that!â⬠Trey cried, truly looking distraught. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s not innocent.â⬠ââ¬Å"But youââ¬â¢re not so sure,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Are you? Your eyes arenââ¬â¢t telling you what your hunter friends are.â⬠He evaded the accusation. ââ¬Å"My family expects this of me. We all have to try ââ¬â especially after we messed up the alley attack. We lost our authorization to kill her then, which is why the council ordered these trials to redeem ourselves and prove we were up to it.â⬠Getting ââ¬Å"authorizationâ⬠to kill someone was sickening, but it was the rest of what he said that made me do a double take. ââ¬Å"You were there,â⬠I said in disbelief. ââ¬Å"In the alley, and ââ¬â and it was you! Youââ¬â¢re the one who grabbed me!â⬠It came back to me now, my assailantââ¬â¢s surprise and hesitation. Treyââ¬â¢s face confirmed as much. ââ¬Å"I knew you were friends with them. I can tell by looking at all of you, although I didnââ¬â¢t figure you two out right away.â⬠That was to Eddie and Angeline. Trey turned back to me. ââ¬Å"I recognized your tattoo the first time we met. I just ignored it because I didnââ¬â¢t think you were involved in anything that I was. I thought you only hung out with harmless vampires, so I didnââ¬â¢t expect you to be there that night. I never wanted you to get hurt. I still donââ¬â¢t, which is why you need to let this go.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m tired of this,â⬠said Eddie. It was a wonder heââ¬â¢d been patient this long. ââ¬Å"We need to bust down the doors of that place and ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Wait, wait.â⬠An idea was forming in my head ââ¬â and it was another crazy one. ââ¬Å"Trey, you said Eddie couldnââ¬â¢t just walk into that place. But could I?â⬠ââ¬Å"What are you talking about?â⬠asked Trey, a mix of suspicion and confusion on his face ââ¬Å"You know what I am. You know what I do.â⬠Trey nodded. ââ¬Å"Our two groups used to be united. Those guys who stopped me on the street even said they thought we should all be working together. The Warriors want Alchemist resources.â⬠ââ¬Å"So, whatâ⬠¦ you want a trade?â⬠asked Trey, frowning. ââ¬Å"No. I just want to talk to this council of yours. I want to explain why Sonya isnââ¬â¢tâ⬠¦ er, why she doesnââ¬â¢t look the way she used to. Thereââ¬â¢s a Moroi who uses a certain kind of magic who could even show you ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"No,â⬠said Trey immediately. ââ¬Å"None of them would be allowed inside. Theyââ¬â¢re tolerated, but thatââ¬â¢s it. You hybrids wouldnââ¬â¢t be allowed either.â⬠Again, he spoke to Eddie and Angeline. Iââ¬â¢d never heard the term hybrids used, but the meaning was clear. ââ¬Å"Okay,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Only humans. Iââ¬â¢m human. Your group wants to work with my group. Let me go with you. Unarmed. Iââ¬â¢ll talk to your leaders and ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Sydney, no,â⬠protested Eddie. ââ¬Å"You canââ¬â¢t go there alone! They tried to decapitate Sonya, for Godââ¬â¢s sake. And remember what Clarence said about radicals stalking him?â⬠ââ¬Å"We wonââ¬â¢t hurt humans,â⬠said Trey adamantly. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢d be safe.â⬠ââ¬Å"I believe you,â⬠I told him. ââ¬Å"And I know you wouldnââ¬â¢t ever let anything happen to me either. Look, arenââ¬â¢t you curious about why Sonya is the way she is? Can you take the chance your people are making a mistake? You said you tolerate Moroi. Sheââ¬â¢s one of them. Let me explain. Iââ¬â¢m not asking for anything else except a chance to speak.â⬠ââ¬Å"And a guarantee of safety,â⬠added Angeline, who looked almost as outraged as Eddie. He nodded at her words. ââ¬Å"You guys are big on the honor stuff, right? Youââ¬â¢d have to promise sheââ¬â¢d be safe.â⬠ââ¬Å"Honorââ¬â¢s what makes us do what we do,â⬠said Trey. ââ¬Å"If we promise sheââ¬â¢ll be safe, she will be.â⬠ââ¬Å"Then ask them,â⬠I urged. ââ¬Å"Please? Wonââ¬â¢t you do this for me? As my friend?â⬠A pained look crossed Treyââ¬â¢s features at that. Heââ¬â¢d hinted before that he owed me for helping end the illicit tattoo ring last month. That would obligate any friend, let alone one instilled with a rigid sense of honor. I knew then, too, that more than honor was on the line here. Trey and I were friends ââ¬â with more in common than Iââ¬â¢d ever realized. We both were part of groups that wanted to control our lives, often in ways we didnââ¬â¢t like. We also had domineering fathers. If Trey and I didnââ¬â¢t have such opposing goals, we might have laughed about all this. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll ask,â⬠Trey said. Something told me he too was thinking of our similarities. ââ¬Å"Because itââ¬â¢s you. But I canââ¬â¢t make any promises.â⬠ââ¬Å"Then ask now,â⬠growled Eddie. ââ¬Å"We donââ¬â¢t have time to waste. And Iââ¬â¢m guessing Sonya doesnââ¬â¢t either.â⬠Trey didnââ¬â¢t deny it. I hesitated, suddenly wondering if this was a smart choice. What would happen if we let Trey out of our sight? Would it be better if we really did drag him to Dimitri? And Sonyaâ⬠¦ how much time did she have left? ââ¬Å"Now,â⬠I reiterated to Trey. ââ¬Å"You have to get in touch with them now. Donââ¬â¢t go to class.â⬠It was probably the first and only time Iââ¬â¢d say those words. ââ¬Å"I swear,â⬠said Trey. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll call them now.â⬠The bell rang, ending our meeting. Although, if weââ¬â¢d had the chance to save Sonya at that moment, I knew each of my friends would have walked off campus then and there. We let Trey go, and he headed back toward his dorm, not toward our classes. Angeline ââ¬â newly free from suspension ââ¬â departed with Jill while Eddie and I walked to history. ââ¬Å"That was a mistake,â⬠he said, face grim as he stared at where Trey had gone. ââ¬Å"For all we know, heââ¬â¢s going to disappear, and weââ¬â¢ll have lost any chance we had at getting Sonya back.â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t think he will,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"I know Trey. Heââ¬â¢s a good person, and I could tell that even if he thinks Strigoi need to be exterminated, heââ¬â¢s not 100 percent sure of Sonya. Heââ¬â¢ll do what he can. I think heââ¬â¢s feeling torn right now, caught between what theyââ¬â¢ve told him his whole life and what heââ¬â¢s starting to see with his own eyes.â⬠Sound like anyone else you know? an inner voice asked. Iââ¬â¢d sort of hoped that Trey would give me an answer right away ââ¬â say, by chemistry. But he wasnââ¬â¢t there either or anywhere else at school the day. I supposed these things took time, and my patience and faith were rewarded at the end of the day with a text from him: Still checking. Some are willing to talk. Others need convincing. Eddie didnââ¬â¢t take Treyââ¬â¢s message as concrete proof when I showed it to him, but I didnââ¬â¢t think Trey wouldââ¬â¢ve said anything if heââ¬â¢d skipped town. Eddie wanted to get together with Dimitri and discuss strategy on this new development. So, we decided to take a group trip downtown. I sent the summons to our family to meet outside the East dorm in a half hour. Jill was the first one to arrive, and she came to a halt when she saw me. ââ¬Å"Wow, Sydneyâ⬠¦ your hair.â⬠I glanced up from where Iââ¬â¢d been answering a text from Brayden, telling him I couldnââ¬â¢t hang out this weekend. ââ¬Å"What about it?â⬠ââ¬Å"The way those layers are styled. They perfectly complement your face.â⬠She was looking at me in that weird way again. ââ¬Å"Well, yeah,â⬠I said, hoping to change the subject. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a, um, good haircut. Sorry we had to get rid of Micah earlier.â⬠It took her a few seconds, but my distraction snapped her out of the hair-induced trance. ââ¬Å"Oh, no. Itââ¬â¢s okay. I mean, things are getting weirder between us anyway.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh?â⬠Micah had seemed as chipper as ever, the last time I saw him. ââ¬Å"You guys are still having problems?â⬠ââ¬Å"Wellâ⬠¦ I guess I am. I really like him. I love hanging out with him and his friends. But I just keep getting reminded of how nothing can happen with us. Like, this morning. Thereââ¬â¢s a whole other world we have going that he canââ¬â¢t be a part of. And I canââ¬â¢t stand the thought of lying to him or keeping him out of my life. I might have to do itâ⬠¦ for real. End things. I know Iââ¬â¢ve kind of said that before, but now I mean it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re here for you if you do,â⬠I said. I technically meant it, but if Jill came sobbing to me afterward, I wasnââ¬â¢t entirely sure what I should say. Maybe I could find a book on appropriate breakup counseling techniques before she did the deed. A wry smile crossed her face. ââ¬Å"You know whatââ¬â¢s silly? I mean, I donââ¬â¢t want to go jumping from one guy to another ââ¬â and I do still care about Micah ââ¬â but Iââ¬â¢m starting to notice what a really good guy Eddie is.â⬠ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s a great guy,â⬠I confirmed. ââ¬Å"Moroi and dhampirs being together are discouraged when theyââ¬â¢re older, but nowâ⬠¦ I mean, I knew some who got together at St. Vladimirââ¬â¢s.â⬠She gave an embarrassed laugh. ââ¬Å"I know, I knowâ⬠¦ I shouldnââ¬â¢t even be thinking like that. One guy at a time. But stillâ⬠¦ the more I see Eddie ââ¬â heââ¬â¢s just so brave and so confident. Heââ¬â¢d do anything for us, you know? Heââ¬â¢s like some storybook hero in real life. But heââ¬â¢s so dedicated, heââ¬â¢d probably never be interested in someone like me. No time for dating.â⬠ââ¬Å"Actually,â⬠I said, ââ¬Å"I think heââ¬â¢d be very interested in you.â⬠Her eyes widened. ââ¬Å"Really?â⬠I wanted to tell her everything. Instead, I chose my words carefully, unwilling to give away his secrets after heââ¬â¢d spoken to me before about letting him handle his own personal affairs. ââ¬Å"He talks all the time about how smart and competent you are. I think heââ¬â¢d definitely be open to something.â⬠He also talked about how he wasnââ¬â¢t worthy of her love, but that resolve might fade if Jill actively went after him. She grew lost in thought, and no more was said on the topic when Eddie and Angeline came walking up. We drove into town, and I dropped Jill and the two dhampirs off at Adrianââ¬â¢s while I ran a few errands. Waiting for Trey was agonizing, and I needed distraction. Plus, I was low on some Alchemist supplies and wanted to make sure I was up to full strength before any venture into the Warriorsââ¬â¢ camp. My phone rang as we were wrapping up. It was Trey, and I stepped outside an herbal store to take the call. ââ¬Å"Okay,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re good to go. Theyââ¬â¢ll meet with you tonight ââ¬â just you.â⬠Anxiety and excitement raced through me. Tonight. It seemed surprisingly soon, yet that was exactly what I wanted. We needed to get Sonya out of there. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll take you there at seven,â⬠Trey continued. ââ¬Å"Andâ⬠¦ well, Iââ¬â¢m sorryâ⬠¦ but youââ¬â¢ll have to go blindfolded. And Iââ¬â¢ll be checking to make sure no one follows us. If they do, everythingââ¬â¢s off.â⬠ââ¬Å"I understand,â⬠I said, though a blindfold certainly made the venture scarier. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll be ready. Thank you, Trey.â⬠ââ¬Å"Also,â⬠he added, ââ¬Å"we want the sword back.â⬠I made arrangements for him to pick me up at Adrianââ¬â¢s, since I had a feeling Dimitri and Eddie would have a lot to say to me beforehand. In fact, I called them as soon as I was off the phone with Trey, to give them a heads-up. I also called Stanton to give her an update. It occurred to me I should have checked with her sooner, but Iââ¬â¢d wanted a definitive answer from Trey first. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t like the idea of you going alone,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"But it does seem unlikely theyââ¬â¢d hurt you. They really do seem to stay away from humans ââ¬â us in particular. And if thereââ¬â¢s a chance to get Karp out of thereâ⬠¦ well. That would save us a lot of fallout with the Moroi.â⬠Stantonââ¬â¢s tone told me, however, that even if she thought Iââ¬â¢d be safe, she wasnââ¬â¢t so optimistic about Sonya. ââ¬Å"Be careful, Miss Sage.â⬠Adrianââ¬â¢s apartment was filled with tension when I arrived. Dimitri, Eddie, and Angeline were clearly agitated, probably because they were being left out of the action. Adrian, surprisingly, looked upset too, though I couldnââ¬â¢t figure out why. Jill watched him with concern, and they kept staring at each other, unseen messages undoubtedly passing to her through the bond. At last, he averted his gaze, like he was ending a conversation. Jill sighed and walked toward the others in the kitchen. I started to speak to Adrian, but Eddie beckoned me forward. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re debating on whether to give you a weapon or not,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Well, the answer is ââ¬Ënot,â⬠ââ¬Ë I said immediately. ââ¬Å"Come on, theyââ¬â¢re blindfolding me. Do you think they wonââ¬â¢t search me for weapons too?â⬠ââ¬Å"There must be a way,â⬠said Dimitri. Since we were in air conditioning, he wore the duster. ââ¬Å"I canââ¬â¢t let you go in there defenseless.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not in danger,â⬠I said, feeling like Iââ¬â¢d been repeating the same thing all day. ââ¬Å"They might be crazy, but Trey says if they give their word, theyââ¬â¢ll stick to it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sonya doesnââ¬â¢t have those guarantees,â⬠Dimitri pointed out. ââ¬Å"No weapon is going to help me save her,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Except for my reasoning. And Iââ¬â¢m armed with that about as well as I can be.â⬠The dhampirs still didnââ¬â¢t seem happy. They went back to arguing amongst themselves, and I left them to find some water. Adrian called to me from the living room. ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s diet pop in there.â⬠I opened the refrigerator. Sure enough, it was stocked with all kinds of pop. And, in fact, it had more food than Iââ¬â¢d ever seen. Another benefit of Nathan Ivashkovââ¬â¢s generosity. I grabbed a can of Diet Coke and joined Adrian on the couch. ââ¬Å"Thanks,â⬠I said, opening the can. ââ¬Å"This is the next best thing you could have to gelato.â⬠He raised an eyebrow. ââ¬Å"Gelato? Sounds like dessert to me, Sage.â⬠ââ¬Å"It is,â⬠I admitted. The mundane topic was comforting amidst all the tension. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s kind of your fault for bringing it up yesterday. Now I canââ¬â¢t stop thinking about it. I wanted some at dinner last night, and Brayden talked me out of it ââ¬â which is probably why Iââ¬â¢m even more obsessed with it. Ever had that happen? Once you canââ¬â¢t have something, you want it that much more.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠he said bitterly. ââ¬Å"It happens all the time.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why are you so down? You think I should have a weapon, too?â⬠With Adrian, it was really hard to guess where his moods would go. ââ¬Å"No, I get your point, and I think youââ¬â¢re right,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Not that I like the idea of you going there at all.â⬠ââ¬Å"I have to help Sonya,â⬠I said. He studied me and smiled. ââ¬Å"I know you do. I wish I could come with you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh yeah? You going to protect me and carry me out of there like you threatened to do last night?â⬠I teased. ââ¬Å"Hey, if thatââ¬â¢s what it takes. You and Sonya. Iââ¬â¢ll toss one of you ever each shoulder. Pretty manly, huh?â⬠ââ¬Å"Very,â⬠I said, happy to see him joking again. His amusement faded, and he became serious again. ââ¬Å"Let me ask you something. Which is scarier: walking into a den of crazy, murdering humans or being with safe ââ¬â though kind of wacky ââ¬â vampires and half vampires? I know the hang-up you Alchemists have with us, but is the loyalty to your own race so strong thatâ⬠¦ I donââ¬â¢t knowâ⬠¦ that the people themselves donââ¬â¢t matter?â⬠It was a surprisingly deep question for Adrian. It also echoed my trip to the Alchemist bunker to see Keith. I was reminded of how Keithââ¬â¢s father hadnââ¬â¢t cared about his sonââ¬â¢s moral character so long as it meant Keith wasnââ¬â¢t on good terms with vampires. I also thought back to the alley and how obstinate the Warriors were about hearing any truth but their own. And finally, I looked over at the dhampirs arguing in the kitchen, continuing to brainstorm covert ways of keeping Sonya and me safe, no matter the risk. I turned back to Adrian. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢d take the vampires. Loyalty to oneââ¬â¢s kind can only go so far.â⬠Something in Adrianââ¬â¢s face transformed, but I hardly paid it any attention. I was too struck by the realization that the words Iââ¬â¢d just uttered were akin to high treason in the Alchemists. Eddie and Angeline left later to get us dinner, and I let them take my car, so long as Eddie drove. While they were gone, Dimitri tried to drill in some more self-defense techniques, but it was hard to learn very much in so short a time. I kept thinking of Wolfe warning us to avoid dangerous places. What would he say about me walking into a den of armed vampire hunters? Eddie and Angeline were gone for a while and finally returned, angry at how long the restaurant had taken. ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t think we werenââ¬â¢t going to be back in time,â⬠said Eddie. ââ¬Å"I was afraid you wouldnââ¬â¢t get food before your mission.â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t even know if I can eat,â⬠I admitted. Despite my earlier brave words, I was starting to grow nervous. ââ¬Å"Oh, you can keep those in case you need the car.â⬠Heââ¬â¢d walked over to my purse with the keys and dropped them in anyway. ââ¬Å"Are you sure?â⬠ââ¬Å"Positive.â⬠He shrugged and then fished the keys out again. Adrian, to my surprise, watched him with narrowed eyes and seemed upset about something. I couldnââ¬â¢t keep up with his moods today. He stood up and walked over to Eddie. After a few moments, they moved even farther away and seemed to be having a whispered argument, one that involved a few glances at me. Everyone else looked uncomfortable and suddenly jumped in with any conversation topics they could find. I could only stare back and forth, feeling like I had missed something important. Trey called me at seven on the dot, saying he was waiting out front. I rose from my chair and picked up the sword, taking a deep breath. ââ¬Å"Wish me luck.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll walk you out,â⬠said Adrian. ââ¬Å"Adrian,â⬠warned Dimitri. Adrian rolled his eyes. ââ¬Å"I know, I know. Donââ¬â¢t worry. I promised.â⬠Promised what? Nobody elaborated. There wasnââ¬â¢t far to walk since he lived on the ground floor, but when we stepped outside, he caught hold of me, his hands resting on my arms. A jolt went through me, both at the touch and the unexpected gesture. His only displays of tenderness were usually with Jill. ââ¬Å"Sage,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"For real. Be careful. Donââ¬â¢t be a hero ââ¬â weââ¬â¢ve got plenty of them back there. Andâ⬠¦ no matter what happens, I want you to know that I never doubted what youââ¬â¢re going to do. Itââ¬â¢s smart, and itââ¬â¢s brave.â⬠ââ¬Å"You sound like itââ¬â¢s already happened and failed,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"No, no. I justâ⬠¦ well, I want you to know that I trust you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay,â⬠I said, feeling a little puzzled. I again had the feeling that I wasnââ¬â¢t being told something. ââ¬Å"Hopefully my plan will work.â⬠I needed to walk away, out of Adrianââ¬â¢s grasp, but couldnââ¬â¢t quite do it. I was hesitant to go, for some reason. There was safety and comfort there. Once I left, I really was walking into the lionââ¬â¢s den. I lingered a few moments more, safe in the circle we made, and then reluctantly slipped away. ââ¬Å"Please be careful,â⬠he repeated. ââ¬Å"Come back safe.â⬠ââ¬Å"I will.â⬠On impulse I took off my cross necklace and pressed it into his hand. ââ¬Å"This time, keep it for real. Hold onto it until I return. If you get too worried, look at it and know that Iââ¬â¢ll have to come back for it. It goes really well with khakis and neutral colors.â⬠I worried he would give it back, but he simply nodded and squeezed the cross tight. I walked away, feeling slightly vulnerable without it, but hoped it reassured him. My discomfort suddenly seemed like a small thing. I wanted Adrian to be okay. I got into the passenger seat of Treyââ¬â¢s car and immediately gave him the sword. He looked about as miserable as he had earlier. ââ¬Å"You sure you want to go through with this?â⬠Why did everyone keep asking me that? ââ¬Å"Yes. Absolutely.â⬠ââ¬Å"Let me see your cell phone.â⬠I handed it over, and he turned it off. He gave it back, along with a blindfold. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll trust you to put this on yourself.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thanks.â⬠I started to slip it on and then, on impulse, looked back toward the building one last time. Adrian was still standing there, hands in his pockets, face concerned. Seeing my gaze, he managed a small smile and raised one hand inâ⬠¦ what? Farewell? A benediction? I didnââ¬â¢t know, but it made me feel better. The last thing I saw was the flash of the cross in the sunlight, just before I covered my eyes with the blindfold. I was plunged into darkness. The company has also adopted effective sustainable strategies and practices for addressing the environmental, social and economic impacts of its business operations and strategies. The company has aligned its growth strategies with its sustainable performance for promoting the economic development (Myer Holdings Limited: Annual Report, 2014). The financial position of Myer Holdings Limited can be evaluated through comparing the financial results of the past two financial years as follows: Financial Year 2014 Financial Year 2013 Total Assets 1,933(in AUD Million) 1,940(in AUD Million) Total Liabilities 1,039 (in AUD Million) 1,044 (in AUD Million) Total Owners Equity 893 (in AUD Million) 896 (in AUD Million) Profit earned-per share 0.17 (AUD) 0.17 (AUD) Total Ordinary Shares Issued 593 million 736 million Profit received by shareholders-per share (DPS) 0.23 (AUD) 0.25 (AUD) Net Cash flows from Investing Activities 104 (in AUD Million) 67(in AUD Million) As reflected from comparing the financial performance of the company over the past two years, it can be said that the companys performance has improved in the FY2014 as compared to that of FY2013. Therefore, it is apparent that Hinduism originated from the Hinduââ¬â¢s religion though it began as a reform movement from within Hinduism. Vedas, which were oral texts that began in 1500 BC, are attributed to the early Buddhism. Gautama was a king who lived an exemplary life. However, when he was walking, he encountered people suffering from illness, old age, death issues, and hermits. This experience triggered his instincts. He decided to relinquish his pleasurable life to find the truth about the agony that people went through. The knowledge is summarized in the four noble truths, which include life means suffering, the cessation of suffering is attainable, the origin of suffering is attachment, and the path to the cessation of suffering. Noble truths of Buddha The first noble truth presents life as a form of enduring pain. According to Buddha, the life led by people is full of suffering and problems (Herbrechtsmeier, 1993, p. 16) because the world that they inhabit and human nature are not perfect enough to provide comfort to human beings.Advertising Looking for term paper on religion theology? They endure a physical suffering that is subjected to their bodies (Kinnard, 2011, p. 4). Some of the sufferings that people encounter include injuries, sickness, pain, tiredness, and old age. People also encounter and endure emotional/psychological pains such as frustrations, sadness, disappointment, depression, and loneliness among many others (Kinnard, 2011, p. 1). These sufferings are experienced in different measures or degrees among different people. However, despite the sufferings, they also experience some occasions of happiness, easiness, and comfort. Nonetheless, in its totality, life remains imperfect because the world is subjected to more frustrations. The experiences made Buddha find out the truth about life. This therefore marked the journey of his quest to find the truth, hence ââ¬Å"â⬠¦the beginning of a six-year quest for awakening (Herbrechtsmeier, 1993, p. 15). As long as one can wish to try to keep his/her life happy and comfortable, he/she cannot maintain the status for the entire period of his/her lifetime. Therefore, the world is characterized by endless sufferings that individuals have to encounter. During his venture, he found a solution to these sufferings. He managed to identify the causes of why people suffer. His title changed to Buddha after he managed to succeed in finding the causes and solutions to the sufferings. In India, the religion was a door to prosperity in life especially when an individual performed his/her actions well. In fact, in the Vedas, ââ¬Å"emphasis is on sacrificial action, work, and the correct performance of that actionâ⬠(Kinnard, 2011, p. 4).Advertising We will write a custom term paper sample on Siddhartha Gautama and Buddhism specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The encounters and experiences that Buddha went through changed his life entirely. His father, Shuddhodhana, managed to keep him off from such scenes- scenes o f people dying, old ages, and in sickness until his old age. The second noble of truth is ââ¬Ëthe origin of suffering is attachmentââ¬â¢. Suffering originates from peopleââ¬â¢s ignorance and their dear attachment or desire on the transient things that are amidst their lives (Kinnard, 2011, p. 56). These things are not only physical or materials things that people perceive and admire to have but also ideas that they have about acquiring any general things about life. Peopleââ¬â¢s ignorance is manifested by their lack of understanding that their mind is attached to these transient /impermanent materials. The reasons why people suffer is due to their clinging and craving. The suffering is brought by their passion, desire, pursuit for wealth, prestige, ardor, and the quest to become rich and be famous and popular. Kinnard (2011, p.9) refers all these as the ââ¬Å"hustle and bustle of the world.â⬠Therefore, people will do everything to ensure that they achieve the thin gs that they desire. They fail to understand that their attachment to these things is transient. Therefore, it is inevitable that they must lose them in a bid to usher in suffering. Individuals will acquire these materials. However, they will again ââ¬Å"fail to manage them properlyâ⬠(Kinnard, 2011, p. 68). Losing them incepts or is the beginning of more problems, as people will begin to develop complications such as high blood pressures due to stress that occurs after the loss of what they desire. The notion of ââ¬Ëselfââ¬â¢ is also ââ¬Å"one of the objects of attachment that is a delusion because an individual cannot abide by him/herselfâ⬠(Herbrechtsmeier, 1993, p. 15). Self is only an imagined entity. In the nature of human beings, the universe will ever consume them.Advertising Looking for term paper on religion theology? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The third noble truth is that cessation of suffering is attainable. This implies that, as human beings, people have the capacity to avoid suffering in their life through causing nirodha. Nirodha is a terminology that means the process of unmasking conceptual attachments and sensual cravings (Kinnard, 2011, p. 65). Therefore, if human beings attain dispassion, they can eliminate the sufferings they go through. This noble truth provides a solution to the problems and sufferings that people encounter when living on earth. It is therefore possible to remove or eradicate suffering. The only way through is human activity, which entails the removal all causes of sufferings (Kinnard, 2011, p. 79). State of nivora i.e. freedom for troubles, worries, complexes, fabrications, and ideas needs to be managed by or attained by human beingsââ¬â¢ own initiative of perfecting their dispassion. Therefore, peopleââ¬â¢s sufferings are something that they can avoid and or manage if they have the po wer and will not to do that. It remains a decision made by an individual. For instance, many people crave to lead certain kinds of life. Such imaginations increase suffering and agony to their life (Kinnard, 2011, p. 70). The secret however of overcoming such sufferings and agony in life is to avoid behaviors such as the desire to lead a comfortable life without hustles and earthly desires. The fourth noble of truth is the path to the cessation of suffering. It is the journey leading to the end of suffering. It stands out as a method or a way that helps an individual to seek improvement (Kinnard, 2011, p. 83). This fourth noble truth is at the middle of hedoism and asceticism, which lead to the end of the rebirth cycle. The truth manifests itself in many cases. As an individual makes progress gradually over time, the individualââ¬â¢s habits of delusions, craving, and ignorance begin to vanish until the person is able to lead a more comfortable life. In fact, in the six years of a wakening, Buddha exercised speculation and used time with leaders of the abstainers. During his stay, he was able to understand and master their systems, but was not convinced that he had found the answers that he was seeking on the source of human suffering. The experiences brought suffering to Buddha who became emaciated because of the puzzles of life (Herbrechtsmeier, 1993, p. 2). As he reveals, once they come to the world, people have no otherwise but to go through the sufferings until they die and depart from this world. The religion comprised of many gods that were believed to be divine. People offered sacrifices to these personified forces of nature with the hope of shunning the many calamities they were encountering. They therefore did praise worshiping besides offering sacrifices to the forces. In return, they got booms from these gods in terms of increased production, protection, healthy sons, and a long life. This is evidenced in the quotation ââ¬Å"in return, humans rec eived booms from the gods-abundant crops, healthy sons, protection, and long livesâ⬠(Kinnard, 2011, p. 3). How the Four Noble Truths Apply in my Life Based on the expositions made in the paper about the four noble truths, it is apparent that they mean a lot, not only to me but also to any other person. Initially, I got worried whenever I faced any form of suffering. However, the four noble truths make it clear to me that, since the sufferings are inevitable and temporary, I should try to live as happily as possible without worrying about the future. I need not to worry because I am not rich. All I need is just enough to take me through today. The future will take care of itself. Suffering is a way of hardening one off in preparation for great things to come. Secondly, they have helped me to know the true nature of reality that life and sufferings go hand in hand. As such, I have developed the sense of appreciating life as it is without questioning. I have been able to apprecia te that sufferings connect all of us. Thus, instead of conflicting with others, I now have the best of reasons to wish them well in their lives. Therefore, the four noble truths are a way of nurturing oneââ¬â¢s peace of mind. Every one needs to emulate the teachings. Conclusion In conclusion, Buddhism is a religious doctrine that can be attributed to Buddha. Like any other religion, Buddhism has its doctrines upon which its followers base their ideologies. These are otherwise referred to as ââ¬Ëtruthsââ¬â¢ that form the basis of any religion. The ancient belief and understanding of the Buddha religion amongst people in the ancient time was not based on truth. Buddha is viewed as an individual who brought enlightenment in the Buddhism doctrine. He found out the truth about life and human sufferings. The four noble of truths are enlightenment to the people and believers of the Buddhism faith. For instance, as revealed in the paper, human beings live and encounter sufferings. These sufferings are mandatory and cannot be avoided. However, human beings cause some of the sufferings due to their cravings and desires. The paper has gone further to confirm that, despite the suffering that people cause to themselves, they too stand a decent chance of eliminating them. Reference List Herbrechtsmeier, W. (1993). I was young then, just starting out, full of optimism and joie de vivreâ⬠¦What? My management skills? Donââ¬â¢t worry, Iââ¬â¢m getting to that part eventually.â⬠One of the best things about the in-person (or phone) job interview is that it gives you a chance to take your sterile-looking, rigidly bulleted resume and create a more rounded narrative of yourself and your career. But itââ¬â¢s an area that takes a bit of skill and finesse. You donââ¬â¢t want to end up way out in Tangentville, but you also donââ¬â¢t want to seem like you canââ¬â¢t back up the information on your resume.Find Your NarrativeBefore the interview, itââ¬â¢s important to limber up by coming up with the narrative you want to express during the interview. Is it that youââ¬â¢re a tough leader who always wants to improve? Are you a problem solver who thrives on challenges? Once you work out what you want to achieve with your interview (and what works well with the job description), you can shape your stories and anecdotes to bolster that narrative.Storytelling isnââ¬â¢t just a way to package yourself, itââ¬â¢s also a way to pull in the interviewer and make them care more about the person and resume sitting in front of them. [via DynamicYield]What to Talk AboutAt The Muse, they recommend having six types of stories in your pocket for any interview:Solving ProblemsProblem solving is a very highly regarded skill for hiring managers. They need to know that youââ¬â¢ll step in and be able to handle things on your own.Talk about: You resolved a conflict between two coworkers, or between you and someone else. You came up with a solution to a crisis at the last minute. You identified an area of cost savings that helped save a budget crisis.DONââ¬â¢T talk about: The time you brokered a peace deal between your two fighting frat brothers, or between your mom and Aunt Susan at Thanksgiving. Unless you ma naged a peace deal in the Middle East in your spare time, stick to work-related stories.Overcoming ChallengesEveryone loves the underdog, right? And sure, itââ¬â¢s good to have examples of when things went well, but many interviewers want to know about how you do when things arenââ¬â¢t going so well. In this story, itââ¬â¢s important to identify the challenge, but more important to show how you conquered it successfully.Talk about: You had a difficult relationship with your boss, but came to an understanding. You found a new and more efficient process for doing something that used to take hours. You had a crazy deadline for a project- and met itDONââ¬â¢T talk about: How you started waking up on time after you got in trouble for constantly coming in late.Bouncing Back from MistakesYouââ¬â¢re not perfect. Spoiler alertâ⬠¦the interviewer knows that. The trick here is turning mistakes to your advantage. Itââ¬â¢s important to be selective here; you want to pick some thing that wasnââ¬â¢t too egregious, and also something that shows real professional growth. Be sure to focus on the outcome (how youââ¬â¢ve pivoted and this mistake made you stronger) over the mistake itself. For this one, you not only have to be a storyteller, but also a spinmaster. Itââ¬â¢s important to show that youââ¬â¢re a better and stronger employee for the experience, which of course wouldnââ¬â¢t be repeated in your new job.Talk about: A mistake you made early in your career that made you better at your job. A knowledge gap that you worked hard to address.DONââ¬â¢T talk about: The time you almost got fired for negligence. A major mistake you made for which you never got caught. The time you hit reply-all to make a snarky comment about someone on the email chain, even though you meant to forward it to your friend Jake only. Or the confidential company information that somehow got made public via your Twitter account.Making Good DecisionsThis is not the time for an elaborate story that ends with your colleagues carrying you out of the conference room on their shoulders, chanting your name. Look for stories that show how you took charge of a situation, or managed others to a successful outcome.Talk about: The team you led to a successful year of sales. The event you organized (and went well). The project you spearheaded.DONââ¬â¢T talk about: Successful initiatives where you werenââ¬â¢t actually the person in charge. Itââ¬â¢s a dangerous game, taking credit for things. You never know who knows whom, and what can be factchecked as soon as you leave the interview.Working Well with OthersYou donââ¬â¢t have to be the shining leader here, itââ¬â¢s more about how you interact. This one is pretty flexible- any kind of project youââ¬â¢ve done in conjunction with other people will do. Colleagues, clients, volunteers, all are potential teamwork stories.Talk about: The event you organized in conjunction with others. The high-profil e project that involved several different departments.DONââ¬â¢T talk about: Times you didnââ¬â¢t get along with others, or had conflicts.Being, You Know, a Real PersonSometimes you get a bit of a wildcard, an interviewer saying, ââ¬Å"So tell me about yourself.â⬠Rather than launch into a chronological timeline of your education and experience, pick a story or two that expresses your priorities and values. It doesnââ¬â¢t have to be strictly related to work, but if you can use it to shore up one of the big skills (leadership, problem solving, commitment, etc.), all the better.Talk about: Youââ¬â¢re training for a marathon. You speak three languages and are working on a fourth. On weekends, you volunteer at a farm for rescued mongooses.DONââ¬â¢T talk about: Inappropriate personal stories. Health issues. Political activities. How to Frame Your StoriesGood interview stories do two things:1. They tell the interviewer something about you that goes beyond your resume bu llet points.2. They engage the interviewer.Itââ¬â¢s the same as any story you tell, whether youââ¬â¢re hanging out at a cafà © with friends or in a job interview: you want to tell it in the best, most entertaining way. This does not mean you need to adopt a Catskills comedian persona (ââ¬Å"take my bossâ⬠¦please!â⬠), but itââ¬â¢s worth the effort to put a little sparkle on your stories, even if theyââ¬â¢re just meant to flesh out the bullet points on your resume.Make the listener care about what youââ¬â¢re saying.Try to tie things back to the job at hand. If youââ¬â¢re talking about leadership skills, talk about how your past leadership makes you a great fit for this job managing three employees. Show the value of these stories to the company that might hire you.Stick to the important points. These stories should be short (maybe only a few sentences). You want to make sure you zero in on the most important details: who, what, when, where, and how it appli es to this new job.Be upbeat.People respond to tone, and if you try to keep the story light and professional, it helps maintain that tone for the overall interview.Make sure thereââ¬â¢s a clear ending. You donââ¬â¢t want to trail off, or wrap up with a weak, ââ¬Å"Soâ⬠¦yeah.â⬠End on a strong note about your goals or what you hope to achieve in this new job.Keep it as short as possible. Here, the sweet spot is somewhere between one-or-two word answers and a ten-minute monologue. Try out some standard answers to interview questions as part of your pre-interview prep. Time yourselfâ⬠¦if you feel like youââ¬â¢ve been talking for a while without coming up for air, you probably have. If you find that your story is going more than a minute or two, start thinking of spots where you can cut it down. What Not to DoWhen thinking about the stories you want to tell in an interview, the things not to do are just as important as the story itself.Donââ¬â¢t use a timeline.Thi s happened, and then this happened, and then this other thing happened.â⬠Iââ¬â¢m already asleep, can you repeat that last event? Instead, try a pattern of ââ¬Å"this happened, and this was the result. What I learned from this wasâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Donââ¬â¢t use jargon.Try to keep terms as universal as possible. If youââ¬â¢re talking to someone whom you know is familiar with them, or theyââ¬â¢re culturally appropriate to your industry, itââ¬â¢s okay to use specific words, but donââ¬â¢t take for granted that everyone will know what a GMU report is if they havenââ¬â¢t mentioned it before.Donââ¬â¢t make stuff up.The truth is always the best in a job interview scenario. Even if it would make for a better story if you accepted the Nobel Peace Prize at the end, itââ¬â¢s not worth the embarrassment of getting caught in a fib.Donââ¬â¢t leave the professional zone.Even if youââ¬â¢re asked to talk about hobbies or personal interests, donââ¬â¢t use that as an excuse to list all of your pet topics. Pick one or two that you can talk about, and for goodnessââ¬â¢s sake, make sure theyââ¬â¢re work appropriate. (Any story where your friend had to bail you out- not great.)Moral of the StoryAt the end of the interview, you want to feel like youââ¬â¢ve achieved a good balance between the you-on-paper (your resume) and your presentation. Using stories and anecdotes to show (not tell) how those bullet points and skill actually shape your career is a great skill to have, and just takes a little practice. This treatise points toward resolving questions on the subject of strong communication orientation and healthier parental relationship; open communication and founding moral values in children. THE IMPORTANCE OF OPEN FAMILY COMMUNICATION 2 Introduction Communication is not merely an art but likewise an important facet in building an ideal and healthy parental relationship. The lack or deficiency in communication among family members invites an augmented possibility of misunderstanding, disagreements and predicaments. Furthermore, poor communication orientation, particularly between parents and a child, assigns greater susceptibility on children to undesirable consequences including, but not limited to, juvenile delinquency and drug abuse. Thus, a strong communication is needed in order to preclude these possibilities. A research conducted by Kelly et al. (2002) proposes that, on the whole, parent-child communication serves as a strong protective factor with respect to the youth involvement with substances. Parents should therefore initiate discussions or display communicative behaviour more than their children. Besides, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦parents may be a more potent influence than they might perceive themselves to beâ⬠(Kelly, Comello, & Hunn, 2002). An unveiled communication between parents and children paves the way for ingenuousness and ideal parental supervision. The development of family relationship is typically determined by the quality of communication encompassing a home. According to Clark and Shields (1997), communication among family members is universally regarded as one of the most important and fundamental aspect of interpersonal relationships. Correspondingly , they added that it is ââ¬Å"a key to understanding the dynamics underlying family relationsâ⬠(Clark & Shields, 1997). In some cases, the quality of parent-child communication is rather slashed due to some changes in location or due to some inevitable transition, for example, when a child needs to provisionally separate from his parents to study at another location. Essentially, this particular subject matter interests the researcher because of its prevalent significance in terms of how THE IMPORTANCE OF OPEN COMMUNICATION 3 communication plays a crucial role in maintaining intimate association between parents and a child. Likewise, how dearth of parent-child communication affects the relationship of a child toward his or her parents and the consequences that could conceivably transpire as a result of this deficiency. In effect, this treatise intends to answer the following questions: (1) how does open parent-child communication precludes feasible emergence of undesirable co nsequences ââ¬â including juvenile delinquency, drug use, and the like - affecting adolescents and young adults? (2) In what ways open parent-child communication can be perpetuated with respect to location, age or means of communication? Open communication does not only bring in healthy home relationship but it also moulds a childââ¬â¢s behaviour and personality. In the face of growing tides of statism and collectivism running through economic philosophies of his contemporaries in the first quarter of the 20th century, Mises remained resolute in his insistence upon a free, uninhibited marketplace. But aside from his heterodox views, Mises made significant contributions to economics as a universal discipline, among which are the three (a monetary theory of the trade cycle, a priori epistemology, and the impossibility of rational economic calculation in a socialist economy) to be discussed here. The first of these contributions was, of course, his monetary theory of the trade cycle. By this theory, introduced in The Theory of Money and Credit, he states that ââ¬Å"whatever constitutes money in a market must originally have derived its value from a non-monetary useâ⬠(North, 2001). This theory is a so-called ââ¬Å"regression theoryâ⬠in the sense that it makes a statement about the beginnings of moneyââ¬â¢s use in society. Misesââ¬â¢ theory of money formed the basis of F. A. Robbery is the taking or attempting to take something of value from another person by threats of violence or by violence itself. Robbery can be committed against an individual person, an organization like a bank or even businesses. Robbery is a felony in all states of the world. There are two kinds of robberies which have been happening in our organization namely: Violent robbery where one uses weapons and aggravated robbery (use of toy pistols) where one uses a very deadly weapon or an imitation of a deadly weapon. It is with great concern that the company has continued to loose a lot of its assets and employees through robbery and it is therefore with this concern in mind that we have to set out the ways to minimize this vice. Our Company lost three employees and close to 30000 dollars last year as a result of robbery with violence. It is therefore in this accord that I decided to consult a lot of organizations and stakeholders in the security sector to get the possible advice of how we can be able to reduce this vice. Among the people I consulted are the Police units of this country and the various prominent security companies in this nation. I got the relevant information which I do wholly believe will be of help to our organization. My report has dealt with the initial definition of the term Robbery and I have outlined the objectives of my report. The findings and outcomes of my research have also been addressed as well as the very sensitive places/areas we need to direct our security manpower to. Lastly I have given crucial recommendations which I hope the top management of our company will adopt and lastly, I have given my personal reflection towards the whole topic of robbery. Findings and outcomes: It was noted that in order to reduce armed robberies in our organization, we should be able to train our staff with some of the best procedures which can help us reduce them. It was noted that people who handle cash should observe the following: Cash handling: Large amounts of cash should not be kept in hand and that our organization should only keep minimal cash on the premises. Conspicuous bags should always be used instead of the bank bags when carrying cash. The staff involved should always be on the alert when carrying cash. Cash should never be left lying around and it should never be counted in view of the public. Cash handling procedures should never be discussed in public. Office precautions: For us to help reduce the risk of armed robberies in our premises, I propose that: Staff should always be on the lookout for suspicious activities near our premises. The description of suspicious people and the registration of vehicles should be noted and the police informed immediately. The windows and doors at the rear of our organization should always be secured with bars and deadlocks. Electronic beepers and other security devices should be put in place to indicate when our staff are entering or leaving the business when we are open for business. The office frontage should always be uncluttered to give a clear view of the street the service area should also be placed in the street frontage. A silent alarm should be connected to a security Company or the police so that it can be activated from near our cash drawers or registers. Security cameras should also be installed so that offenders can be photographed while committing the armed robbery. Victims of robbery with violence: If one of our staff fall a victim of an armed robbery, then it is my advice that you remain calm. In any case the armed robbery is being committed; useful information such as the description of the offenders and vehicles can help in the early arrest of the offenders. However, the following should be remembered: Dont be heroic by putting your life in danger. No amount of cash is worthy a life lost. Always obey the offenders instructions and do what they tell you to do and nothing else. Dont volunteer to give any information. Always avoid eye contact with offenders and their weapons and instead concentrate on the features of the offenders. If you are not directly involved, stay out of danger by leaving the building safely and raising an alarm. A victim should be deliberate in his/her actions. Lower denomination notes should he handed to the offenders if you are ordered to hand over money, but ones safety should always be considered first. If one of you or another responsible member of staff is able, the police emergency number should be phoned immediately and the line kept open. The registration number, type and color of the vehicles used in the robbery should be carefully observed. Minor details assist the police in faster apprehension of the culprits. Physical appearance details such as age, height, build and hair color should be well noted and behavioral details like mannerisms, speech, clothing, tattoos and scars should be considered. The type of weapon used, the method and direction of escape should also be noted. All witnesses should be requested to stay until the police come since they will want to speak to them. Assure them that their evidence could be of importance when put together with other evidence and dont allow witnesses to talk about the incident. Victims of armed robbery suffer from trauma and therefore the organization should seek professional victim liaison officers to provide advice in contacting required agencies. Preventive techniques that should be implemented to prevent armed robbery: Armed robbery is one of the most potentially serious offenses committed all over the world. It is therefore important that organizations including ours must try by all means to prevent these robberies. To be able to do this, the following opening and closing procedures should always be observed: Two employees should be present during the opening and closing of the premises. When opening the premise, thorough inspection should be done to detect any signs of forcible entry before anyone enters the business. At closing time, the security officers should ensure that nobody is hiding in the business or loitering inside the compound prior to leaving the business. A well maintained and light interior and exterior should always be place. Security measures which allow the workers to have a complete view of the environment such as elevated vantage points, convex mirrors and the placement of the customer service and cash area should be visible the counter or work area should be regularly cleaned to remove old fingerprints. Make public the point that the organization uses good cash protection skills and uses very high security surveillance machines. Employees should be trained to report and watch for suspicious people outside and inside the organization. Police should be called if the employees are worried about a potential risk. Lunch hours and breaks should always be varied so that some employees are always visible in the organization. Our organization should cut back and maintain trees and shrubbery which criminals could use to hide. Employees should be informed to ask for identification from repair people, workers, guards e.t.c before they are allowed to enter into restricted areas. Our organization should consider having an automatic silent alarm system with a panic alarm system. Our organization should consider using doors that lock automatically upon closing in the secure areas. Drop or delay action time lock safe that use a dual key should be used by our organization. Use of greater criminal prosecution in Robbery cases: We as an organization wholly believe that criminal prosecution is a very effective tool in dealing with the robbery with violence cases. We also strongly believe that by enforcing greater criminal prosecution for suspected robbery suspects, we shall be demonstrating the societys opprobrium of a very offensive character in way that some methods cannot. Greater criminal prosecution should be used so as to set criminalization far apart from the regulatory sanctions which if set properly can be able to deter and punish criminals rather than deterrence and penalty. However, practical and circumstantial use of greater criminal prosecution cannot always be the best for our organization and it can lead limit its effectiveness as an instrument for solving regulatory crimes because: It always inhibits the use of more flexible and alternative sanctions. It will brand our organization with criminality when circumstances leading to these prosecutions may not be of direct consequence of our actions. It always takes a long time to come to the courts and the respondent concerned may at last be acquitted. Use of greater criminal prosecution will always fail to correct the damage already caused by that offence. It may result in the high cost in relation to the proper penalty for the offender. RECOMMENDATIONS: I highly recommend that the top management should be holding security meetings with all the employees and inform them that the security of our organization is paramount to everything else. We therefore recommend that all our staff should be taken through all the necessary security trainings so that they can be informed that the security of an organization does not entirely depend on the security personnel alone but on everyone. I will recommend that the top management to allocate a certain percentage of the income in this financial year so that sophisticated security systems and cameras are purchased and installed in the organization. This will ensure that possible robbery threats in our organization are dealt with. My personal Reflection: I have personally heard many friends tell me about how their houses, organizations, businesses have robbed and the associated trauma they have suffered as a result of this robbery. In some instances, many victims have lived to tell the story but in some other unfortunate incidences, the victims have fallen victims of this inhuman behaviour and thereby succumbed to death. I personally tried to interview some security personnel and at most times, most of them have blankly told me that their companies are seldom well equipped to deal with the robbers. They claim the top management is very uncooperative as far as security concerns are concerned. I therefore realized that the loss of assets and human life could be tremendously reduced if all the stakeholders in an organization worked as a team and put in strong security mechanisms to deter robbery with violence. I could therefore like to urge everyone everywhere to realize that security doesnt involve the security personnel or the police alone but is a collective responsibility for each and every individual. We must all join hands towards the prevention of robbery. Nicki Larochehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14334476322575965190noreply@blogger.com0
